Why Wales suits sauna bathing

The Wales Coast Path runs 870 miles — the first path in the world to follow an entire country’s coastline — and winter sea temperatures around Wales sit at roughly 6 to 9°C. Cold, clean water within reach of most of the population, and an outdoor swimming culture already using it: that is the combination wood-fired saunas have followed.

Coast Path length: Natural Resources Wales. Sea temperatures: typical December to February range. Checked 24 October 2026.

The kinds of sauna you will meet

These are the setups, not our coverage. Knowing which one you are booking changes what to bring and what to expect.

Wood-fired, on the coast

A barrel or cabin stove at a beach, harbour wall or slipway, usually with the sea as the cold side. Sessions run to the tide and the weather as much as the clock.

Lakeside and woodland

Often at a farm stay, campsite or glamping site, with a plunge tub or a river rather than the sea. Quieter, and more likely to be private hire than a shared slot.

Mobile

A trailer sauna that comes to a car park, an event or your own driveway. The most variable on facilities — ask about changing and water before booking.

Indoor and spa

Electric or wood-fired inside a gym, hotel or wellness studio, with showers and changing as standard. Listed here, but only wood-fired, electric and smoke saunas are counted — infrared and steam rooms are a different thing.

What a listing tries to answer

The questions people actually ask before booking, in the order they ask them:

  • Heat source — wood-fired, electric or smoke
  • The cold side — sea or lake access, a plunge tub or an ice bath, and whether it is checked
  • Session length, group size, and whether private hire is offered
  • Price and what the price is per — a person, a session or the whole sauna
  • Changing, parking and step-free access
  • Whether it is shared or private, and any age limit

Where a venue does not publish one of these, the listing says “not published” rather than leaving a gap that reads as a dash.

Hot, then cold, then rest

Most people come for the contrast rather than the heat alone: ten to fifteen minutes in the sauna, a short dip in the sea or a plunge tub, then rest before going again. Two or three rounds is a normal session.

With Welsh winter sea temperatures around 6 to 9°C, the cold side is not a formality. If you are new to it, keep the first dips short, never go in alone, and do what the sauna staff tell you. Read the safety notes before your first session — they cover the health conditions that need a GP’s view first.

Sauna etiquette

Rinse before you go in. Sit on a towel. Keep your voice down in a shared session and leave your phone outside — most operators ask for this and some enforce it. Swimwear is standard in public saunas in Wales. Book ahead where you can: sessions are small, and sunrise, sunset and weekend slots are the first to go.

Which councils have been checked?

1 of 22 councils have at least one counted sauna. 2 have been searched. The rest have not been searched yet, which is different from finding none.

Counted public saunas by council. A red mark is a searched or unsearched council with none counted yet, not a claim that none exist.

How much does a counted session cost?

1 counted venue has a communal price. Private hire is not on the same scale. A ranked cheapest list starts at five verified communal prices.

  • Ty Sawna communal £12 · 55 min, private hire £95 · 55 min.

Sauna Index

Which verified public saunas are wood-fired?

1 verified public sauna is wood-fired so far: Ty Sawna.

  1. Ty Sawna · Oxwich Bay · Wood-fired

Sample size 1. Counted venues with heat_source confirmed as wood-fired. Alphabetical. This is not a claim that no others exist.

Which verified public saunas have a spot-checked sea dip?

None yet. An operator saying there is a sea plunge is not enough; we spot-check before this list.

Sample size 0. Counted venues with cold_plunge = sea and cold_plunge_spot_checked. Alphabetical within council.

Where is the lowest communal session price?

1 verified communal price so far. A Wales-wide cheapest list waits until at least 5 venues have a checked communal price.

Sample size 1. Counted venues only. Compared as £ per person per 30 minutes so a 25-minute session is not ranked against a 55-minute one without saying so. Hidden as a ranking below 5 prices.

Which verified saunas can be hired for a group of 6 or more?

1 counted venue has a verified private-hire price for 6 or more: Ty Sawna.

  1. Ty Sawna · Oxwich Bay · From £95 per group

Sample size 1. Counted venues with a private_hire price and max_people of at least 6.

Staying safe

Check with your GP first if you have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, are pregnant, have epilepsy, or take medicine that affects heart rate, blood pressure or heat tolerance. Do not use a sauna with alcohol, illness or a fever. Leave if you feel dizzy. Cold water: enter gradually, never alone, and follow RNLI guidance. Never dive in.

Questions

How many public saunas are there in Wales?

Only venues that pass the counting rule are in the total. The number on this page is how many we have verified so far, not a finished census. Councils that have not been searched are marked.

How much does a sauna session cost in Wales?

Where we have a verified communal price, it is shown per person with the session length. Private hire is a separate figure, per group. A cheapest-in-Wales list is published only once five communal prices are verified.

Do I need to wear swimwear?

Follow the venue. We do not generalise a clothing rule across Wales.

Is sauna safe if I have a heart condition?

Check with your GP first. This site does not give medical advice.

How do I find a mobile sauna this week?

We state a place only when a pitch in the database has a start and end date covering that day. 'Currently at' without dates is not a pin on the map.

Are beach saunas open in winter?

Only if that venue's season has been checked. If the hours are unconfirmed, we say so.

How a sauna gets counted

It is in Wales, at a fixed site or with published pitches in Wales. A member of the public can book without being a hotel resident or a club member. Day passes count. It has a published price, or a published free or donation policy. It is a wood-fired, electric or smoke sauna. Infrared and steam are listed and not counted. It is trading, or has a confirmed opening date within 90 days.

A mobile operator is one venue. Two sites are two venues. Three cabins on one site are one venue. Pipeline is never counted. Residents-only and members-only sessions are labelled and left out of the total.
