History of padel in Wales

Padel reached Wales in 2021. Windsor Lawn Tennis Club in Penarth opened the first court in April that year, with Tennis Wales coverage of an official opening involving Annabel Croft. The Welsh Padel Centre in Cwmbran followed in January 2022. Pure Swansea added courts in July 2023. Indoor and covered clubs then opened in Cardiff, Wrexham, Swansea (Jaxx), and a further wave in 2026 including Smash, Padium, Unbound and Porthcawl. Dates on this page match the All In Wales padel dataset (checked 17 October 2026). Caernarfon remains pipeline only until a court is confirmed on the operator's own page.

World origins (sourced)

The International Padel Federation describes padel as originating in Mexico in 1969, then spreading through Spain and Argentina before the UK boom. We do not add unsourced origin stories beyond that federation account.
