What is pickleball?

Pickleball mixes parts of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It is played on a court about the size of a badminton court, with a low net, solid paddles and a light plastic ball with holes in it. Most games are doubles, and the rules are simple enough to pick up in one session.

The ball moves slower than a tennis ball and the court is smaller, so there is less running and less strain on the joints. That makes it popular across a wide age range, including people coming back to sport after a long break — while still getting quick and tactical at a higher level.

How pickleball grew in Wales

Wales has a longer pickleball history than most people expect. The first game in the country was played at Cwmbran Stadium on 3 December 2013, and Torfaen Pickleball Club — later Cwmbran Celts — was the first club in Wales. Clubs elsewhere followed, and players from those early groups helped start them.

Pickleball Wales was established in 2024 to govern and develop the sport nationally, and Sport Wales recognised pickleball in November 2024. The first Welsh Nationals were held at Bangor University from 11 to 13 April 2025.

Sources: Pickleball Wales, Sport Wales board minutes, November 2024, Cwmbran Celts. Checked 24 October 2026. A 2026 Nationals venue is not stated by the governing body, so none is named here.

The four places pickleball gets played

Which kind of venue you find locally changes what a session costs and how you book. This describes the types, not our coverage — the counts above are the coverage.

Leisure centres

Council and leisure-trust centres often add pickleball to the weekly timetable, played in sports halls already marked for badminton. Usually the cheapest way to try it, and rarely bookable online — the timetable is the booking.

Clubs

Local clubs run regular sessions, ladders and friendly fixtures against other Welsh clubs. Most do informal coaching and lend paddles, and most have a contact rather than a booking system.

Tennis and racket centres

A growing number of tennis and padel centres have added pickleball, which is where online booking and floodlit outdoor play tend to appear. Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre is the clearest example in our data.

Community halls and schools

Smaller groups meet in village halls, church halls and school sports halls, especially in rural areas. The hardest to find and the least likely to have a website — if you run one, we would like to hear from you.

Starting from scratch

You need no kit and no experience. Most clubs and leisure centres have spare paddles and balls, and a beginner session covers the scoring and the basic rules in the first half hour. Indoor trainers with non-marking soles and ordinary sportswear are enough.

Check whether the venue nearest you runs a beginner or taster session before you travel. Sessions are small and some clubs run a waiting list at busy times, so a message first is worth more than turning up hopefully.

Add your club or venue

Run a pickleball club, a leisure-centre session or a court in Wales? Send us the details and we will add it free. We also want to know about courts in planning or under construction. Every listing here carries the source it came from and the date it was checked, which is why the count is small and why it is worth something.

Listed, but not counted yet

These are real places. They are not in the headline number because a fact we need is missing or came from a single source. The reason is in the last column.

    • GBP 8 per session · basis not stated

Pay-and-play price of GBP 8 per session on the centre's pickleball page. Court count, session days and times, and whether the GBP 8 is per person or per court are all not stated, so it is not counted. Address and postcode not on the page; the council page was not fetched for them.

  • Radyr LTC

    Not published

Club page confirms address and postcode, plus two booking routes: coaching courses, and private court play for members only. No court count, session times, levels or prices are published, so nothing is counted. Partner 'Tennis Squad' has no contact details. Next step: ask the club for court count and whether pickleball is available to non-members.

  • Aberaeron Pickleball Club

Court count not stated · not stated (leisure centre refurbished with 7mm cushion floor and dedicated non-volley zone lines)

    Not published

Club's own page gives a recurring Friday session at the leisure centre and published phone and email. No price or fee basis is given, so the session cannot be counted under spec 2.3. Street address and postcode are not on the page. Ceredigion is inferred from the town. Course coaching is mentioned but not priced. Club describes itself as joinable by contacting the organiser.

New to pickleball?

Pickleball is played on a court the size of a badminton court, with a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball. Serves are underarm and diagonal. The seven-foot strip either side of the net is the non-volley zone — the kitchen — and you may not volley with a foot inside it. Games usually go to 11, win by two, and only the serving side scores. Doubles is the common format, and most clubs run mixed-level sessions where rotation is the norm.

Questions

How many places can you play pickleball in Wales?
The number on this page is how many venues we have verified, not a finished census. A venue counts when the public can play there and it has a bookable court or an active verified session. Councils we have not searched yet are marked as such.
How many dedicated pickleball courts are there in Wales?
None that we can confirm. Dedicated means the court exists for pickleball rather than borrowing lines on a tennis court, and no venue we have checked states its court type. That is a gap in what clubs publish, not evidence that none exist.
How much does pickleball cost in Wales?
It depends on the basis, and we never mix the two. Some venues charge per person per session, others per court per hour. Every price on this page carries its basis in the same cell, because an £8 session and a £10 court hour are not comparable numbers.
Can I play pickleball without joining a club?
At some venues yes. The access filter separates pay-and-play from members-only, using what each venue publishes.
What is the difference between pickleball and padel?
Different sports. Padel is played in a glass-walled court with a solid bat and a pressurised ball; pickleball uses a paddle and a perforated plastic ball on a smaller badminton-sized court, often with a non-volley zone at the net. All In Wales keeps a separate padel directory.
Why is a venue listed but not counted?
Because one source alone said it, or because a crucial fact — a price, a day, a court count — is not published anywhere we could check. The reason is shown next to each held venue.

Method

It is in Wales and the public can play — pay-and-play, by booking, or through a club or community session open to new joiners. It has at least one bookable pickleball court, or one active verified session. A session counts only if it is recurring and has a day, a start time, an organiser and a price (or a stated 'free'). "Dedicated courts" counts only courts whose type is stated as dedicated. Where a source does not say, it is not counted. A club playing at two venues is one club; each venue is counted once. Pipeline — courts in planning, or venues considering pickleball — is never counted.

Prices are shown with their basis — per person per session or per court per hour — and never averaged across the two.
