How many cities in Wales?

Wales has 7 official cities:

  1. Cardiff – the capital of Wales

  2. Swansea

  3. Newport

  4. Bangor

  5. St Davids – the smallest city in the UK by population

  6. St Asaph

  7. Wrexham – gained city status in 2022, as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations

1. Cardiff

  • Status: Capital of Wales (since 1955)

  • Population: ~360,000

  • Highlights: Cardiff Castle, Millennium Stadium (Principality Stadium), Cardiff Bay, major cultural and political centre.

2. Swansea

  • Population: ~250,000

  • Highlights: Coastal city on Swansea Bay, known for its beaches, Dylan Thomas (poet), and nearby Gower Peninsula (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

  • Highlights: Gained city status in 2012, has a cathedral dating back to the 13th century, located in Denbighshire in North Wales.


7. Wrexham

  • Population: ~65,000

  • Highlights: Became a city in 2022, known for Wrexham AFC (made globally famous by Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney), historic brewing industry, and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (a UNESCO site nearby).
